How to float carbon foils

The procedure to vent and pump is :

For normal operation the rough pump pumps through the diffusion pump, so the valve between the chamber and the rough pump is closed and the valve between the diffusion pump and the rough pump is open. The venting valve is of course closed. The butterfly valve between the chamber is the diff pump is open.
To vent, turn off the penning, and bias on detectors. Then simply close the butterfly valve. Leave the rough and diff on - they now just pump on the diff. Now slowly open the vent valve - follow the pressure on the analog gauge readout.
To pump again, the procedure is reversed. First close the venting valve. Then close the valve between the diff and the rough, and slowly open the valve between the rough and the chamber. When the pressure in the chamber is around 1e-2 torr (this takes 10-15 mins), close the valve between the chamber and the rough (observe that the pressure does not rise much), and open the valve between the diff and the rough. After a minute or two slowly open the butterfly valve between the diff and the chamber - observe that the pressure drops.
